Microsoft's Gaming Subscription Members Can Still Access Day-One Releases for Under $30 Per Month

Following Microsoft's latest announcement of an extensive restructuring of its Game Pass tiers, Xbox has clarified what these changes mean for players who currently hold an Xbox Game Pass for Console in effect. As stated by Xbox, subscribers who currently holds a grandfathered Console subscription with automatic billing turned on will not be affected by the new pricing adjustments.

Latest Updates to Xbox Game Pass Subscription Plans

Earlier this week, Xbox revealed that its top-tier plan will now cost $29.99 monthly, a controversial move among subscribers. The update accompanies two renamed options—Essential and Premium—which alter the available features and exclude day-one game releases. This shift followed another adjustment in last year, which phased out the Console plan in favor of Core and Standard tiers. Back then, Xbox permitted existing members on the Console plan to retain their subscription at the same price of $11 per month with full benefits, including the ability to play day-one releases.

“Players who are currently enrolled in the Console plan and have automatic payment renewal activated can maintain their subscription,” an Xbox spokesperson explained. “If users disable automatic payment renewal, or their subscription lapses, they will need to select between the Essential, Premium, Ultimate, or PC Game Pass plans when rejoining.”

Benefits and Costs Remain Unchanged

The perks and pricing of the legacy subscription will remain the same, according to Xbox: “Day one games are accessible with Game Pass Ultimate and PC subscriptions, as well as for members who continue to hold an active Game Pass for Console. Gamers who are presently enrolled in Xbox Game Pass for Console and have automatic payment renewal turned on can keep their subscription at $10.99/month.”

Upon inquiry, a company representative declined to specify how long grandfathered Console plans will stay available for current subscribers.

Steps to Verify If You Are On a Legacy Subscription

  • Visit the Game Pass website and log in with your Xbox account.
  • Select your username in the top right corner of the page once signed in.
  • Click on “My Microsoft Account.”
  • If you see “Console subscription” shown as an active subscription, you will continue to get day-one games for $11 a month as long as automatic billing are turned on.

Make sure to check if you hold this exclusive benefit before canceling your subscription, as it will be impossible to get back into it once you opt out.
