Enjoying this Downfall of the Tories? That's Understandable – But Completely Incorrect

There have been times when Tory figureheads have seemed reasonably coherent on the surface – and different periods where they have sounded animal crackers, yet continued to be cherished by their base. Currently, it's far from either of those times. One prominent Conservative didn't energize the audience when she presented to her conference, while she threw out the red meat of migrant-baiting she believed they wanted.

It’s not so much that they’d all arisen with a renewed sense of humanity; instead they didn’t believe she’d ever be able to deliver it. It was, a substitute. The party dislikes such approaches. One senior Conservative reportedly described it as a “New Orleans funeral”: boisterous, energetic, but still a goodbye.

Future Prospects for the Group That Can Reasonably Claim to Make for Itself as the Most Accomplished Democratic Party in the World?

Some are having a fresh look at one contender, who was a hard “no” at the beginning – but with proceedings winding down, and everyone else has departed. Others are creating a interest around a newer MP, a young parliamentarian of the newest members, who presents as a countryside-based politician while wallpapering her socials with immigration-critical posts.

Could she be the figurehead to challenge opposition forces, now outpolling the Conservatives by 20 points? Is there a word for overcoming competitors by adopting their policies? Moreover, should one not exist, perhaps we might adopt a term from combat sports?

If You’re Enjoying Such Events, in a How-the-Mighty-Are-Fallen Way, in a Serves-Them-Right-for-Austerity Way, That Is Understandable – However Totally Misguided

You don’t even have to examine America to understand this, or consult a prominent academic's groundbreaking study, his analysis of political systems: all your cognitive processes is emphasizing it. Centrist right-wing parties is the key defense against the radical elements.

Ziblatt’s thesis is that democracies survive by appeasing the “propertied and powerful” happy. I’m not wild about it as an guiding tenet. It feels as though we’ve been keeping the privileged groups for decades, at the cost of other citizens, and they never seem adequately satisfied to stop wanting to take a bite out of disability benefits.

But his analysis is not speculation, it’s an comprehensive document review into the historical German conservative group during the interwar Germany (in parallel to the British Conservatives in that historical context). As moderate conservatism falters in conviction, when it starts to adopt the buzzwords and superficial stances of the far right, it transfers the control.

Previous Instances Showed Some of This During the Brexit Years

The former Prime Minister associating with a controversial strategist was a notable instance – but extremist sympathies has become so pronounced now as to overshadow all remaining Conservative messages. Where are the old-school Conservatives, who prize predictability, conservation, the constitution, the national prestige on the world stage?

Where did they go the progressives, who portrayed the United Kingdom in terms of economic engines, not powder kegs? Don’t get me wrong, I didn't particularly support any of them too, but it's remarkably noticeable how these ideologies – the one nation Tory, the reformist element – have been marginalized, in favour of ongoing scapegoating: of newcomers, Islamic communities, welfare recipients and activists.

Appear at Podiums to Music That Sounds Like the Opening Credits to the Television Drama

And talk about what they cannot stand for any more. They portray demonstrations by 75-year-old pacifists as “carnivals of hatred” and use flags – national emblems, patriotic icons, all objects bearing a splash of matadorial colour – as an open challenge to anyone who doesn’t think that total cultural alignment is the best thing a person could possibly be.

We observe an absence of any inherent moderation, that prompts reflection with their own values, their own hinterland, their original agenda. Each incentive the political figure throws for them, they pursue. So, no, there's no pleasure to see their disintegration. They are dragging social cohesion into the abyss.
